Philosophy and Aims

The course is designed to offer graduates from various disciplines an intensive conversion course to prepare them for a career in hospitality. It offers individuals who want to develop a deeper understanding of the nature of international hospitality and tourism management, knowledge on aspects like tourism’s numerous economic, social and cultural impacts and the management interventions needed to address problems related to hospitality operations and the development of tourism. It is anticipated that students will come from two different backgrounds: directly from the successful completion of a first degree, either in this country or from abroad, or from a background where they have had significant work experience in one or more sectors of the hospitality and tourism industry.

Aims

  1. To offer an intellectually stimulating and challenging environment based on current thinking and best practice in Hospitality and tourism education which facilitates in-depth understanding of the role played by international Hospitality and tourism in a world order increasingly subject to the stresses and strains of globalisation.
  2. To enable participants to understand the key concepts in Hospitality and tourism management and the theoretical debates associated with the nature of hospitality and tourism and its operation within the wider context of national and international hospitality and economic development.
  3. To critically evaluate the key notions in tourism (e.g. the sectors comprising the tourism industries, the destination as a framework for analysis and management and issues associated with sustainability) will provide an overarching context for students to understand the management and development of tourism.
